Why I Chose Naturopathic
By Marcus Laux, ND
When people find out my original goal was to be a conventional medical doctor, they often ask why I changed to naturopathic medicine. Part of the answer has to do with my father.
In 1986 my dad was lying in a hospital bed with
an acute heart condition, and the doctors didn't give
him long to live. I flew back to Massachusetts to be with my
dad. And after eight hours of sitting by his bedside and watching
him get worse, I knew something other than a heart condition
was going on.
There were too many symptoms that didn’t match up with his original diagnosis. He had tremors, he was bloated, and his skin was ashen gray. Plus he had double vision, his temperature was elevated, and he hadn’t been able to sleep in weeks.
I Believed the Cardiologist’s Diagnosis Wasn’t Right
I could tell my dad was having an allergic reaction to one of his cardiac medications, and I said to the cardiologist (who was a good friend of mine), “I think you need to take him off the heart rhythm medication. He’s having a reaction to it. It’s not obvious or classic, but it’s severe.” The cardiologist said, “Absolutely not!”
This was the first time in my life I questioned this cardiologist’s opinion. He was a hero to me, and he was the very reason I was intent on a medical career. But I said, “Let’s take my dad off the meds.” The cardiologist told me, in that case, my father’s life was in my hands.
Thankfully, in two days my dad was a remarkably different man. He was feeling better, his symptoms were disappearing, and his health was improving dramatically.
A Moment of Realization
Even at a very young age, I knew I was a healer, which is why I decided to become a doctor. But as I was studying pre-med I became discouraged by the experience—hospitals smelled like chemicals, and doctors seemed more interested in money than their patients.
Then after I saw what conventional medicine did to my dad, I knew there had to be a better way. It was at that precise moment that I recommitted myself to my patients and practice as a doctor of naturopathic medicine.
After 10 years of college and medical school, 15 years of practice, and 20 years of research, I firmly believe naturopathic medicine is the safest, most comprehensive, and naturally effective approach to medicine. It looks beyond the symptoms to the source, treating you as a whole person rather than a bunch of separate, unrelated symptoms.
Discovering a Better Way
There are thousands of pharmaceutical drugs you can take for whatever illness or ailment you have. But they’re only masking the symptoms, not curing you or fixing the source of the condition. So while you may feel better, you may not truly be better. Plus, the side-effects of medications are often treated as though they’re symptoms of the original illness. In which case, the doctor gives you more drugs, and it become a never-ending vicious cycle.
Natural medicine is different. It looks beyond the symptoms to the source. And a naturopathic doctor treats the whole person, rather than the symptoms in isolated parts of the body—and it’s done with natural healing modalities tailored to the individual.
“Twenty years ago, I felt like a lighthouse in the middle of the pharmaceutical industry’s fog of deception. But fortunately, over the years, the fog has been lifting.”
When I first became a naturopathic physician, alternatives to conventional medicine were considered “on the fringe” or outright quackery. However, I knew in my heart that the natural path was the right path. Now, people all over the world are seeking natural ways to stay healthy and cure whatever ails them. They want natural, effective, true healing—not drug numbing.
And as surprising as it sounds, I haven’t
abandoned conventional drug-based medicine either. Instead, my
approach is variation of what’s called “integrative
medicine.” I use natural medicine wherever practical and
possible, but integrate pharmaceuticals and natural medicine
when it’s the best prescription for the patient.
